Gonna Stick My Sword in the Golden Sand: A Vietnam Soldier's Story has just been released. The title comes from a stanza of the gospel traditional, Down by the Riverside, with its refrain--"Ain't gonna study war no more." Golden Sand is a bold, dark, and intense retelling of the Vietnam experience through the eyes of an army scout that is […]

In every case of a dark mark in history, you will find a common thread: the mix of fear and deeply held beliefs, which lead to a herd mentality. This has been a very successful tool from the Salem Witch Trials to Nazi Germany to the McCarthy hearings. Every dark event in history bears this trait. You will find in every rise of a dictator a common thread: maki […]

    • Pelican Lake July 20, 2016
I spent this past weekend with my good friend Angie and her family at their summer get-away spot on the shores of beautiful Pelican Lake. Located just outside of the town of Glennwood in Pope County, Minnesota, Pelican Lake is about a two hour drive from the Twin Cities on Interstate 94 West, U.S. Highway 71, and Minnesota State Highway 28.The lake covers an […]

Leaving tomorrow for eight weeks of summer camp with Czech kids, first in the forests of Krivoklat, then the beautiful rolling hills of Moravia.I do have a week off, when I hope to head for the Tatras mountains in Slovakia, and a few days of retreat at the lovely Marian shrine of Litmanova, on the border with Poland.

    • Tim Kaine: 'let women be priests' July 23, 2016
Hillary has chosen her running mate, Virginia senator Tim Kaine. He's a Catholic who has received a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood for voting consistently pro-choice. The environmentalist group, League of Conservation Voters, likes him too. Still, many feel he's not quite liberal enough. I do wish Hillary had chosen Elizabeth Warren instead, b […]

“SNAP Needs Our Help”: Guest Post Response

Following the post on these pages by Frank Cocozzelli  “SNAP Needs our Help“, we have received these words of thanks in the comments thread.  As comments can easily be missed, I have copied it as a Guest Post , where it will have greater visibility.

-Terence

Good morning,

Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. We have made great progress in the past few years but sadly rarely a day goes by that we do not hear from new victims of clergy abuse.
Our National Conference will be in Chicago the weekend of July 30 to August 1. We would like to invite your readers to join us for this event. Speakers in the past have included Frank Keating, former head of the bishops lay review board, Fr. Tom Doyle, a canon lawyer and out spoken critic of the way the hierarchy has handled the abuse crisis and Jason Berry a journalist who has written extensively about this issue.Thank you again for all your help. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
