Gonna Stick My Sword in the Golden Sand: A Vietnam Soldier's Story has just been released. The title comes from a stanza of the gospel traditional, Down by the Riverside, with its refrain--"Ain't gonna study war no more." Golden Sand is a bold, dark, and intense retelling of the Vietnam experience through the eyes of an army scout that is […]

    • The Spring Blizzard of 2018 April 14, 2018
It's being called a blizzard and a winter storm of "historic" proportions. I'm opting to acknowledge the season we're actually in (as hard as it may be to believe) and calling it the spring blizzard of 2018. . . . And, yes, it's still very much happening right now in the Twin Cities and across southern Minnesota.I was out in it […]

About Life, Universe and All…The luminous Czech artist, Marie Brozova, creator of the wonderful 'Forest Shaman' painting featured on my blog, lives with her husband and seven cats deep in a Czech forest - without electricity or running water. • Kittens go to the vet April 20, 2018
Today my sister gave me a ride to the vet to take the two kittens. One had an eye that hasn't opened and the vet place had taken a step back from agreeing to adopt the kittens out. But things seem to be working out. The vet loved the kittens and said they would be very adoptable - they said they would take them in about a week or so. The kitten with the […]

COMPANIONS ON THE JOURNEY

Thanks to Contemplative Catholic once again for the reference to another alternative, inclusive Catholic Eucharistic community: Companions on the Journey.

“Companions on the Journey” describes a group of Roman Catholics and persons from other faith traditions who have gathered as an independent non-hierarchical Eucharistic community since May 1997. Each individual’s faith is derived from his/her experiences of God, immanent and transcendent, and is illuminated by the teachings of Christ and the wisdom of other spiritual traditions.

The community sees itself as open, fluid, inclusive, participatory, hospitable and loving. A sense of friendship, shared values and spirituality continues to grow among us. All may volunteer their help according to their individual talents and abilities. Consensus of the community members guides and determines our decisions.

People of all faiths are welcome at the services, including the Eucharist, the community meetings, social events (picnics, potlucks, etc.), charitable activities and frequent lectures. The people of the Companions community, by mutual desire and to the extent possible, share two to three hours each Sunday morning aimed at supporting each person’s spiritual growth and strengthening our community bonds. This time includes a Eucharistic service with a homily, a social time and, occasionally, an educational program or a community meeting. Children’s liturgies are organized throughout the year. The community celebrates one Sunday and two weekday Masses each week. Fr. Sean O’Laoire, Ph.D., Denise Roy, M.Div., and Fr. Paul Roy, Ph.D. are Spiritual Directors for this self-sustaining group of about 300 persons.
